Are Santa call apps safe for children?

It's a fair question, and worth asking before you hand your phone to a six-year-old. Here's what actually matters, including the things worth checking in any app of this kind — ours included.

Is there a real person on the line?

In Santa's Secret Line, no. Your child is never connected to another human being. The Santa voice is generated by the app on the call itself, which means there is no stranger, no operator, and no possibility of your child being put through to someone unexpected.

This is worth verifying in any app you try. A small number of services do connect callers to live performers, which can be perfectly well run — but it is a different thing, and you should know which one you are using.

What to check before you download anything

• Does it require an account? An app that demands a sign-up before a child can hear Santa is collecting more than it needs.
• Is the subscription clear? Seasonal apps are a common home for surprise auto-renewals. The price and the cancellation route should be obvious before you pay.
• Does it say what happens to audio? Any app that listens to a child should tell you plainly what it does with what it hears.
• Is it designed for supervision? Apps built to be used with a parent present behave differently from apps built to occupy a child alone.

Santa's Secret Line is built for parents, not handed to children to use independently. No account is required to get started. The honest caveat

The thing most parents actually worry about isn't data — it's the moment their child realises. Children work things out, usually later than we expect and earlier than we'd like. A Santa call is a lovely thing while it's believed, and our advice is simply to enjoy it while it lasts rather than trying to stretch it past the point where they're playing along for your benefit.
